SOL
Fall 2019
project goal
My intent for this project was to create a lighting device which could act as a visually balanced, sculptural piece, as well as provide warm mood lighting. Additionally, the assignment was to experience every step of the design process, from research and ideation to manufacturing, branding and sale.
IDEATION
Manufacturing
Building the Base
The lamp stand is made out of 10” galvanized steel pipes and aluminum roofing flashing. I used a template to trace and cut twelve circular pieces out of the aluminum, which I bent into a cone shape and adhered with an epoxy weld.
Concrete Pour
To stabilize the lamp, I filled the base with concrete. The lamp stands perfectly well on its own, as the globe is quite light and doesn’t cause it to tip over, but the form is visually top-heavy so having more weight at the base reduces visual and emotional tension.
Finishing up
Once the stand was fully assembled, and the bases filled with concrete, I sanded them smooth, primed, and painted them. The wiring was run up through the center of the stand and the socket was pressure-fit to the pipe. The globe could then sit securely on top.
